Why You Should Be Thankful for Your Oily Skin

Oily skin can be frustrating to handle. Having to wipe oil off your face every few hours or having to wash it more often than others can be a lot of work and that does not even include the zits that appear from time to time because of it.

Don’t resent your oily skin, though! Having oily skin is actually a fantastic thing. Oil keeps your skin hydrated – that’s why men and women who have naturally oily skin usually don’t have as many wrinkles when they get older. If you have oily skin, be thankful for it. It means you will look younger than your peers when you reach your 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond!

What causes oily skin?

The first answer is your genes. Every person has a skin type and you happen to have oily skin. If your skin is dry on certain occasions, it doesn’t mean that your skin type has changed. It just means that factors either internal or external are causing it to turn dry.

What are other factors that cause oily skin? Sun exposure can make your skin oilier than usual. UV rays are the culprit in this scenario because as the skin gets damaged by the sun, the skin increases oil production as an injury response. The skin needs to produce more oil to soothe damaged skin. Other factors that can make your skin oily include hormonal changes, physical or emotional stress, and seasonal changes.

What Kind of Facial Should You Choose?

Are chemical peels right for oily skin?

Please note that it is best to schedule a consultation with a dermatologist to get a better insight on what is right for your skin.

Chemical peels, often used on the face, hands, or neck, improve the skin’s appearance by peeling off old skin. Once the upper, older skin is exfoliated, smoother regenerated skin is revealed. It is important to avoid sun exposure after getting a chemical peel since new skin is more sensitive to the sun, at least for a certain period.

Can I keep washing my face to cure my oily skin?

There are many ways for you to control oiliness, but excessive washing isn’t one of them! Washing your face too many times can increase oil production rather than achieve what you’d like to achieve – to normalize your skin. It is advisable that you wash your face with warm water and a gentle cleanser. Do this twice a day.
